Medical Care for Children in Germany

German pediatric care consists of specialized clinics staffed by professionals trained specifically to work with children. Family rooms where parents can stay are standard.

There are seven pediatric university hospitals in the country. Four of them are recognized as Centers of Excellence in pediatric oncology and cardiac surgery. The wards feature play areas, and school classes are held on-site.

How's it going cure

The standard patient pathway is from initial request to return home and long-term follow-up.

    All transcripts, genetic tests, scans. Professor's conclusion in 5-7 days.

  2. In-person examination and diagnosis

    Full diagnosis on the day of arrival, no long waits.

  3. Pediatric Tumor Board

    Pediatric oncologist, neurosurgeon, and psychologist discuss treatment plan.

  4. Treatment

    Surgery/chemo/proton therapy. Parents next door - family room.

  5. Rehabilitation

    Ergotherapy, speech therapy, inpatient school classes.

  6. Long-term follow-up

    Video counseling every 3 months for the first year.

Frequent questions

Will mom and baby be in the room?
Yes, family rooms are standard in children's hospitals in Berlin and Brandenburg.
Does the child attend inpatient school?
If treatment lasts longer than 4 weeks—the clinic has teachers on staff, so your child won’t fall behind in their studies.
What language barrier?
All pediatric clinics work with interpreters. There is a Russian-speaking psychologist at Charité and in Potsdam.
Do they do CAR-T for children in Germany?
Yes, it is the only country in Europe where CAR-T therapy is approved for children with ALL up to the age of 25.
Is proton therapy dangerous for a baby?
It is much safer than conventional radiation therapy—it targets only the tumor without affecting the brain or spinal cord.
Can you help with a visa for the whole family?

Are orphan diseases treated in Germany?
