Cardiology Treatment in Germany

German cardiac centers are the global benchmark for the treatment of coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, valvular heart disease, and heart failure. They are home to the only centers for robotic cardiac surgery in Europe.

There are over 80 cardiology centers in the country, including five top-tier centers (German Heart Center Berlin, Potsdam, Charité, Bad Nauheim, and Bad Krozingen). Over 100,000 heart surgeries are performed annually, including over 5,500 for international patients.

Methods treatments

German clinics use all modern approaches, from classical to the latest personalized approaches.

Aortocoronary bypass surgery (ACB)

Open and off-pump bypass surgery. Germany is the world leader in survival rate (98.4% in 30 days).

Coronary artery stenting

Modern drug-eluting stents, percutaneous intervention (PCI), and bifurcation stents for complex anatomy.

TAVI - aortic valve replacement through the hip

Minimally invasive valve replacement without opening the chest. Suitable for patients 70+ and high-risk groups.

MitraClip / TriClip

Percutaneous correction of mitral and tricuspid insufficiency - without open-heart surgery.

Radiofrequency ablation of arrhythmias

3D mapping, cryoablation, treatment of atrial fibrillation, WPW syndrome, ventricular tachycardia.

ICD / CRT implantation

Cardioverter-defibrillators and resynchronization therapy are lifesavers for CHF and risk of sudden death.

Da Vinci cardiac surgery

Robotic mitral valve surgery and ACS with minimal trauma and rapid recovery.

Heart transplant / LVAD

Heart transplantation and artificial ventricle implantation (HeartMate 3, HeartWare). Waiting list 6-18 months.

How's it going cure

The standard patient pathway is from initial request to return home and long-term follow-up.

  1. EKG analysis, echo, CT angio.

    Send statements and scans - the professor estimates the diagnosis in 3-5 days.

  2. In-person consultation in Germany

    Examination, additional studies (coronarography, MRI of the heart).

  3. Heart Team - a multidisciplinary consilium

    A cardiologist, cardiac surgeon, anesthesiologist, and interventionalist discuss tactics.

  4. Operation or intervention

    On the plan of the consilium: PCI, ACS, TAVI, ablation, etc.

  5. Inpatient + early rehabilitation

    3-10 days of observation, LFC, adjustment of therapy.

  6. Long-term follow-up

    Control by video link after 1, 3, 6 months.

Frequent questions

How far in advance can I start treatment?
For urgent cases: 5–7 days from the date the documents are submitted. For elective procedures: 2–3 weeks to coordinate with the clinic.
What is included in the cost of surgery?
Surgeon, anesthesia, supplies, implant (stent, valve), hospital stay, basic rehabilitation. Not included: interpreter, accommodation, and transportation.
Is it possible to undergo TAVI instead of open surgery?
TAVI is indicated for aortic valve stenosis in patients aged 70 or older or those at high surgical risk. The decision is made by the Heart Team.
What are the warranties on stents and valves?
We use only certified implants from Medtronic, Edwards Lifesciences, and Boston Scientific. The manufacturer’s warranty is lifetime.
Is ACS for diabetes mellitus and renal insufficiency performed in Germany?
Yes, the protocols are designed for patients with comorbidities. Off-pump CABG plus monitoring of renal function is the standard at the German Heart Center.
How long does rehabilitation last?
In Bad Nauheim or Bad Krozingen—14–21 days. You can stay there or participate in the program online from home.
Will insurance cover it?
Russian and Ukrainian compulsory health insurance policies do not provide coverage. International policies (Allianz, Cigna, BUPA) provide partial coverage; please check with your insurer.
