To receive medical treatment in Germany, you need a medical visa (Category C), not a tourist visa. The main difference lies in two additional documents: an invitation from a German clinic specifying the diagnosis, treatment plan, and cost, as well as a medical report from your attending physician confirming the need for treatment abroad. A medical visa can be extended while in Germany; a tourist visa cannot.
Basic requirements (as for any Schengen visa): a passport valid for at least 3 months after the end of the trip and with two blank pages; a completed VIDEX application form; two biometric photos measuring 35×45 mm; travel insurance with coverage of at least 30,000 euros; proof of financial means (a bank statement showing at least 70 euros per day of stay); and a reservation for accommodations.
Additional requirements for a medical visa: the original invitation from the clinic (Kostenübernahme) bearing an official stamp; a medical report from the attending physician stating the diagnosis and justifying the need for treatment in Germany; and proof of payment for treatment or a letter of guarantee.
Documents are submitted through the VisaMetric visa center. Appointments are made online on the website. Biometric data is collected during the initial application. The average processing time is 15–45 calendar days. In urgent medical cases, expedited processing may be available, but it is not guaranteed.
An accompanying person (husband, wife, parent, child) must submit the documents at the same time as the patient. Additionally, the following will be required: a copy of the invitation from the clinic, a document confirming the family relationship (marriage certificate or birth certificate), and a letter explaining the purpose of the trip.
An incomplete set of documents is the most common reason. Insufficient financial proof—the bank statement must show a stable balance, not a one-time transfer made just before submission. Mismatch in purpose—if the invitation specifies a 2-day check-up but a 3-month visa is requested, this will raise questions.
