In Germany, rehabilitation is a medical procedure, not a vacation. You can only be admitted to a rehabilitation clinic with a referral from your attending physician following surgery or a course of treatment. The program is tailored to each individual, and the patient’s progress is assessed daily.
After joint replacement surgery, the patient begins walking on the day of the procedure, but full recovery takes 6–12 weeks. Inpatient rehabilitation during the first 2–3 weeks significantly accelerates this process. After cardiac surgery—the program includes graded physical activity, blood pressure monitoring, self-management training, and psychological support. After cancer treatment—recovery from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and extensive surgeries. The program is designed to restore physical fitness, reduce fatigue, and facilitate adaptation to daily life. Following neurological conditions—such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or spinal surgery. Neurorehabilitation includes physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and neuropsychology.
A typical rehabilitation program in Germany includes 4–6 hours of therapy daily: therapeutic exercise and mechanotherapy, physical therapy (electrostimulation, ultrasound, magnetic therapy), occupational therapy (recovery of daily living skills), hydrotherapy (swimming pool, underwater massage), neuropsychology and speech therapy (for neurological cases), and psychological support. The patient works with a team of 5–8 specialists.
