There are several cardiac centers in Berlin and the surrounding area that rank among Germany’s leaders in terms of the volume and complexity of heart surgeries performed. Every year, Berlin hospitals perform thousands of cardiac surgeries—ranging from standard bypass procedures to artificial heart implants.
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the “gold standard” treatment for ischemic heart disease with multiple coronary artery lesions. The surgery lasts 3–5 hours, and the hospital stay is 7–10 days. Valve replacement and repair are performed for aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation, and other valve defects. Whenever possible, German surgeons prefer to repair the patient’s own valve rather than replace it with a prosthetic one. TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) — a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery for patients over 75 years of age or those at high surgical risk. The valve is implanted through the femoral artery, without opening the chest.
The German Heart Center (DHZC/Charité) is Europe’s largest cardiac center. It performs more than 3,500 heart surgeries per year. It operates the world’s largest program for mechanical circulatory support (artificial heart). It is Germany’s leader in heart and lung transplants. Both adults and children with congenital heart defects undergo surgery here.
The Brandenburg Heart Center (Immanuel Klinikum Bernau) is the region’s only specialized heart center outside of Berlin. Over 1,500 surgeries per year. The only center in the region offering laser extraction of pacemaker leads. Just 20 minutes from Berlin—the highest standard of cardiac surgery without the long wait times typical of the capital.

Cardiac surgery often requires quick decisions.
